She appeared in the troubled Middle East over a Coptic Church that Her apparition was a call to the world to believe and pray to God, it was a manifestation of love from Mary and the Holy Family, for all humankind.
Historical Background:
The writer told the story of construction of the church as follows: The land for the church was owned by the Khalil family. In 1920, the Blessed Virgin appeared in a dream to a member of the family, instructing him to build a Coptic church in her honor on that site. She promised to bless it in a special way in fifty years. The church was subsequently erected in 1925.
The Beginning of the Apparitions:
The first apparition occurred on the evening of April 2, 1968. A group of Muslim workmen at a garage across the street saw what appeared to be a “white lady” on the central dome of the church. At that time one of the workmen, a Muslim named Farouk Mohammed Atwa, feared the woman was about to commit suicide and yelled, “Lady, don’t jump!”. While some of his colleagues ran to alert the priest, the figure revealed herself as a luminous being dressed in light. A woman in the crowd cried out, “Settena Mariam!” (it’s Our Lady, Mary!). The apparition continued until May 1971. By time the apparitions became less frequent first they were 2 or 3 per week then one monthly in 1969 until It’s over in May 1971.
Miraculous Cures
A flight of glowing white doves appeared and hovered around the apparition before it vanished. Farouk Mohammed Atwa, who had a gangrenous finger scheduled for amputation, discovered the next morning at the hospital that his finger was completely healed. This was documented as the first known miracle at Zeitoun. And many other miracles were recorded later
Zeitoun’s Apparition Significance:
The author referred to the significance of the apparition of Zeitoun by the following sentences:
It is too early yet to assess the full significance of Our Lady’s public appearances at Zeitoun. But besides their reaffirmation of the reality of the supernatural and the existence of God, one can perceive the salvific role of the Blessed Virgin. in evidence, as it was at Fatima in 1917.
Her role is essentially that of preparing the way for her Divine Son, by opening the souls of mankind to His redeeming grace. Nor is her mission restricted by barriers of race or creed, as the visions of Zeitoun so dramatically underscored, for her maternal solicitude embraces the entire human family. She appeared over a Coptic Church and greeted and healed Christians of all denominations, together with Muslims, Jews and unbelievers, in an eloquent and glorious manifestation of love and by her silent invitation to prayer, directed all to look beyond and above her.
